John attended Selwyn Avenue School along with his siblings. He learnt to play the violin at school, which he also played in the Methodist Church in Winchester Road.
On the 23rd August 1918 near Meaulte in France, the 6th battalion of the Queens advanced under an artillery barrage to gain more territory, it was here that John lost his life just a few months before the Armistice was signed. 22 men lost their lives in that attack and 63 were wounded.
